Clothing: Test: Fizik Artica X5 – No more cold feet

21 December 2017 by Florian Nowak

Test: Who doesn't know it? The cold days are here, but you would still like to be on the road by bike or are dependent on the bike as a means of transport. There is suitable clothing for all weather conditions, but feet can quickly become a problem in wet and cold weather, despite overshoes. There is now a suitable winter cycling shoe for this, the Fizik Artica X5. We tested the new 2018 model for you.

The Artica X5 is exactly the right companion in the winter months for everyone who is not afraid of the cold and snow. The MTB shoe should keep your feet warm and dry while riding, making tours in the cold more comfortable. Fizik promises a super stiff, comfortable, warm and fully waterproof shoe. The new Fizik Artica X5 features an adaptable, lightweight fit. Seamless bonding technology on the shoe's exterior provides low-profile impact protection for the toughest rides. The fully enclosed waterproof outer layer utilizes a surface that is extremely easy to clean and any dirt can be washed off instantly. A waterproof zipper on the outer layer expertly keeps moisture and water out. The carbon-reinforced nylon outsole is durable, lightweight, and stiff to aid power transfer. In addition, the Artica X5 is equipped with a comfortable Fizik Winter Edition insole, which has a comfortable fleece upper material and an insulating aluminum foil underside for the cold season.

Fizik Artica X5 review

The Artica X5 is the perfect MTB winter cycling shoe, offering warmth, comfort and protection for rides in even the coldest and wettest conditions. We were particularly impressed by the water-repellent properties and the good insulation, even when it was -2 degrees and wet, we were able to spend several hours outside on the bike without any problems and without cold feet. Even if the Fizik Artica X5 looks a bit bulky at first due to its massive upper, it is still a sporty performance shoe. The upper material mentioned, as well as the inner part of the shoe, adapt very well to the individual shape after a few rides. The internal speed lacing system of the Artica X5 can also be quickly and precisely adapted to the individual foot shape and does its part for comfort. The breathable membrane maximizes airflow, which really ensures that you don't sweat unnecessarily in the shoe. With the help of rubber treads, the profiled sole ensures that you have the best grip even on slippery surfaces and always stay on the ground.

The Fizik Artica is also available as an R5 version, which is the counterpart for all road drivers. It has the same winter properties as the Artica X5.

Conclusion: Fizik Artica X5

More than Florian Nowak

Florian Nowak is a professional cyclist at the EuropeTour level and has competed in many international races. At the German championship in 2017, he was the best non-WorldTour professional in 7th place and was therefore able to recommend himself for the Tour de L'Avenir and the World Championships. But he doesn't just feel comfortable on the racing bike, he's also always drawn to off-road terrain. In addition to sport, he works on his second mainstay and has completed his business administration studies at the LMU Munich.
