cycling: Cancellara case: Schweizer calls for Phil Gaimon to a “duel”

18 November 2017 by Florian Nowak

Cycling: Fabian Cancellara has challenged Phil Gaimon to a race after the American ex-pro in his new book accused the Swiss of using mechanical doping to win the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix in 2010.

There has been a lot of buzz in recent days about Phil Gaimon's new book Draft Animals, in which the former Cannondale pro has accused the Swiss of motor doping. So far, Cancellara has let his management and his lawyers speak for themselves, who have called for the book to be banned from sale. Now the Swiss ex-professional commented personally on the subject for the first time, via Twitter. He had publicly approached Phil Gaimon and challenged him to a race.

Hi @philgaimon, I actually don't know you, but I kindly invite you to beat me at one of my 8 #ChasingCancellara races, by next year 2018. You choose the @chasecancellara - date out of 5 countries. I am very curious to see how much watt you can push!Start training!#nomotorneeded pic.twitter.com/cxNzKaCG4Q

Cancellara invites Gaimon to one of his 8 ChasingCancellara Events via his Twitter account to beat him. He is very excited to see how many watts he can pedal. The post is rounded off with the hashtag #nomotorneeded. ChasingCancellara are VIP events giving everyone the chance to take on Cancellara himself over a short distance, with those who beat him receiving a 'Fabian Cancellara Conqueror Certificate'. Gaimon immediately responded to Cancellara's post and, in reference to his nickname "Cookie Monster", wrote if there were cookies because bike rides should have cookies. It is still unclear whether he will actually take part in one of the events.

Are there cookies? Bike rides should have cookies

In the past, Cancellara has always denied allegations of mechanical doping and once said: "My body is my engine". However, new UCI President David Lappartient told Cyclingnews.com that the UCI will investigate the recent claims.

More than Florian Nowak

Florian Nowak is a professional cyclist at the EuropeTour level and has competed in many international races. At the German championship in 2017, he was the best non-WorldTour professional in 7th place and was therefore able to recommend himself for the Tour de L'Avenir and the World Championships. But he doesn't just feel comfortable on the racing bike, he's also always drawn to off-road terrain. In addition to sport, he works on his second mainstay and has completed his business administration studies at the LMU Munich.
