20 October 2017 by Michael Behringer

World Track Cycling Championships

Track cycling: Day 2 of the European Track Cycling Championships 2017 in Berlin. With 1.800 spectators, slightly more fans found their way to the Berlin Velodrom today. And that was a good thing, because Miriam Welte succeeded in the 500 m time trial first gold medal for Germany to win. The BDR was also able to win the second medal of the day in this competition, because Pauline Sophie Grabosch made sure of a double victory by winning the silver medal. What else happened on the second day of the European Track Cycling Championships 2017 in Berlin...

The long wait for the first gold medal

The Velodrom in Berlin on Landsberger Allee was opened to spectators at 11:30 am. After a few qualifying and preliminary runs, it was all about medals from 16:30 p.m. In the first competitions of the day, the German-speaking professionals didn't have much to report. Trine Schmidt won that for Denmark in an impressive manner points race of the ladies. Charlotte Becker (Germany) finished a respectable sixth place. The Austrian Verena Eberhardt was in the lead after the first sprint and ended up tenth. In the one pursuit triumphed the British Katie Archibald. Germany's Gudrun Stock was sixth, Lisa klein eighth. Gerben Thijssen secured the gold medal for his country Belgium Elimination Driving the gentlemen. The Swiss Loic Perizzolo just missed out on the podium with fourth place. The German Maximilian Beyer ended up in 13th place.

Gold! Welte & Grabosch with a double victory in the 500 m time trial

The tension rose among the 1.800 spectators in the Velodrom Berlin when the 500m time trial of the women was on the program. For the first time, the Germans started as favorites - and they lived up to this role. Miriam Welte - multiple team sprint and 500 m time trial world champion - secured the first gold medal for the German Cyclists' Association at the 2017 European Track Cycling Championships. Her compatriot Pauline Sophie Grabosch also grabbed the silver medal with second place. Double victory for Germany in the women's 500 m time trial! This should have blown away her disappointment with yesterday's team sprint silver.

Miriam Welte: "I was very sad yesterday. That might have helped me a bit today. I'm super happy."

BDR in the men's sprint & omnium without a chance

At the end of the day there were two more men's competitions. In the Omnium the Spaniard Albert Torres Barcelo triumphed just ahead of the Dane Julius Johansen and the French Benjamin Thomas. Gael Suter (Switzerland) finished 18th, Andreas Graf (Austria) 2th and Lucas Liss (Germany) XNUMXth Sprint of men. Here the German Maximilian Levy failed in the quarterfinals against the Frenchman Sebastien Vigier. The current U23 European Champion later secured the gold medal in the final in the professional competition in a duel against Jeffrey Hoogland from the Netherlands.
