Test: A lot is expected of a helmet manufacturer - extensive research, complex development for uncompromising protection, good wearing comfort and aerodynamics. Of course, the helmet should also be safe in the end, and woe betide it doesn't look good. A fine line for every manufacturer; will the balancing act succeed in the case of the new Specialized Ambush Comp? We tested it.
The helmets of the bicycle giant also go through the development departments with a lot of meticulousness and passion. In addition to bikes for every area of use, which are traditionally built according to the "put on it and feel good" principle, Specialized also has a complete range of accessories at the start. The fact that the Specialized helmets are not only designed by marketing experts can also be seen from the fact that know-how is obtained from cooperation with completely different industries. See the collaboration with McLaren on helmet aerodynamics. The Ambush, an all-rounder in Specialized's helmet division, has developed into a very popular helmet over the years. 159,90 euros are called for it. Anyone who looks across the MTB world will immediately think of a buddy who often carries this example with them.

But not everyone is willing to invest more than 150€ in a helmet. Specialized has designed the new Ambush Comp for exactly this group of buyers, which will be available for less than €100. The design is similar, it falls low on the neck and is equipped with the slogan all-mountain all-rounder. We wanted to find out whether it could hold a candle to its "big brother" and graced the head of our tester for a few months. Speaking of the head: Specialized strives to offer the right model for every skull; Not every manufacturer lets four sizes roll off the assembly line. With S, M, L, XL in five different color combinations, there should be something suitable for everyone.

The Mindset 360 system has already proven itself in the previous model. With just a few tricks, you can adapt the helmet exactly to the shape of your head. With the embedded adjustment wheel, the helmet can be adjusted to the head size all around. In addition, the system can be moved up and down through five different levels in the neck area. The visor impresses with a large adjustment range, can be easily moved and does not fall down even on rough descents. On top of that, there's an integrated glasses holder. The Tri Fix strap system is all the more minimalistic. In my opinion, this trick is very beneficial. Simple, you can adjust the strap with one pull without having to set up the entire strap system again afterwards.
And it fits... The weight of 350 grams including visor, for size M (54-58 cm) is also okay.

Good for me, bad for a test: I didn't brake on the tree with the helmet on, nor did I go over the handlebars. From my own experience, I can't say anything about protection, but I trust the developers here. The Californians emphasize almost like a mantra that safety and protection have the highest priority during development. They also use the in-mold process during production, which means that high stability can be achieved with low weight. A reinforcement cage made of composite materials further increases stability - despite the numerous ventilation openings. The bare foam material can be seen in the neck area, which is pulled down low - this does not detract from the function in any way, but does not look as high-quality as the complete casing of the more expensive Ambush.
The many, cleverly placed openings ensure a pleasant air circulation and a mostly quite pleasant climate in the helmet. However, depending on the temperature and driving speed, you can't prevent the Ambush Comp from getting sweaty. However, the upholstery quickly absorbs sweat without becoming unpleasantly smelly too quickly. During a break, they can be removed quickly and easily and then dry within a very short time.
