Clothing: Test: Shimano CE-S52R – Unspectacular entry-level model

5 October 2017 by Florian Nowak

Test: As hard as it may sound, the Shimano CE-S52R has to be rated 'average'. From the packaging to the lenses to the frame, the glasses meet the necessary standard and don't make any major blunders, but they also don't offer any highlights or other features. It's fine as an entry-level model, but you usually expect more from a brand like Shimano.

Shimano CE-S52R - Glass

When it comes to glasses, they use fairly robust, dimensionally stable and light polycarbonate glasses that offer complete UV protection. The shape is relatively small, which is why the goggles just cover the eye and hardly close it, which is why not only dirt and water can easily get into the eyes, but with certain head positions the wind can become a problem and the eyes are poorly protected. In addition, the glasses are provided with a special anti-fog coating and have a scratch-resistant finish, which should also protect against breaking the glass in the event of a fall. However, this did not happen in our test (fortunately).

Shimano CE-S52R - fit

The frame of the Shimano CE-S52R glasses is made of light Grilamid TR90 material, which is very stable and robust. The frame offers a decent grip and hardly wobbles, the TPE temple ends are non-slip but press here and there. The medium-sized nose pad, on the other hand, is quite comfortable and also individually adjustable. However, the shape of the frame and actually of the whole glasses is very special, which is why you often have the feeling that you are actually only looking under the glasses and cannot really use the actual privacy protection function. When driving, the glasses got in the way and were more of a nuisance than helping us.

Shimano CE-S52R – Packaging & Accessories

The Shimano CE-S52R comes with interchangeable lenses and a microfiber goggle pouch in a lightweight case. Here, too, the lack of imagination comes through again because the customer is not offered anything really special.

Unfortunately, the Shimano glasses could not convince us in any way, it starts with the uncreative name and runs through the entire performance of the glasses. As a well-known brand like Shimano, we don't really do ourselves any favors by offering such glasses.

More than Florian Nowak

Florian Nowak is a professional cyclist at the EuropeTour level and has competed in many international races. At the German championship in 2017, he was the best non-WorldTour professional in 7th place and was therefore able to recommend himself for the Tour de L'Avenir and the World Championships. But he doesn't just feel comfortable on the racing bike, he's also always drawn to off-road terrain. In addition to sport, he works on his second mainstay and has completed his business administration studies at the LMU Munich.
