cycling: Vuelta a España Stage #13: Gaviria? smock? Trentino for the third time!

September 1, 2017 by Michael Behringer

Trentino Matteo Vuelta

Cycling: Matteo Trentin and his team Quick-Step Floors continue to ride a wave of success. The Italian won his third stage of the Vuelta a España 2017 today. This was the fifth success for the Belgian team. Chris Froome (Sky) finished seventh at the same time. From 16th place there was a gap of seven seconds. As a result, Ilnur Zakarin (Katusha-Alpecin), David de la Cruz (Quick-Step Floors), Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana) and Tejay Van Garderen (BMC) lost time.

Trentin is the best sprinter of the Vuelta

Matteo Trentin is of course well known to cycling fans. However, he is probably less well-known to most viewers because of his sprint strength. In the shadow of his teammates Fernando Gaviria and Marcel Kittel, he usually plays no role in a mass finish. He often does important helper services. But at the Vuelta a España he's allowed to run - and is in no way inferior to Gaviria and Kittel. On today's 198-kilometer 13th stage from Coin to Tomares, he left his competitors behind for the third time. Admittedly, the sprint elite is not exactly at the start here in Spain. Nevertheless, Trentin dominates the mass arrivals in an impressive way. The Quick-Step Floors team will be delighted. After Gaviria had already won four stages at the Giro d'Italia and Kittel five at the Tour de France, they now have the next serial winner in their ranks in Trentin. After almost four and a half hours, his compatriot Gianni Moscon (Sky) and the Dane Søren Kragh Andersen (Sunweb) were left behind. The German Michael Schwarzmann (Bora-hansgrohe) was fourth. Chris Froome was again unscathed. Apart from crashes and defects, the Briton is simply not to be gotten into trouble.
