cycling: Cycling World Championships in Bergen: Sunweb wins the women's and men's

September 17, 2017 by Michael Behringer

Sunweb World Cup

Cycling: Gold! Team Sunweb has every reason to celebrate today. The Dutch and German team triumphed in the team time trial for both women and men. Lennard Kämna can therefore call himself world champion at a young age.

Exciting fight for the medals

The Sunweb team won the gold medal in the men's World Championship team time trial in Bergen. But it was extremely close. At the first intermediate time after 10,5 kilometers, a first tendency was already apparent. Only Quick-Step Floors (+1,34 seconds) could keep up with Sky's best time. Teams BMC (+9,47) and Sunweb (+10,46) were not too far behind either. All other teams should have no chance in the fight for the medals. After 31 kilometers, Sunweb smashed Movistar's fastest time to date by 55,22 seconds. The German team was around five seconds faster than Sky, who were only four. 3,05 seconds faster than Sunweb was BMC, Quick-Step Floors - also only four - was suddenly more than 16 seconds behind. It appeared to be a duel between BMC and Sunweb.

BMC runs out of breath at the end

When the time was taken for the last time after about 38 kilometers before the finish, the tendencies could be confirmed. Sky and Quick-Step Floors continued to lose time as they were down to four men. Sunweb with six and BMC with five showed their strength as a team. Only in the last few kilometers did they lose their first people. Team Sunweb riders were already making themselves comfortable in the finish area awaiting the arrival of BMC. The Swiss squad was still four seconds ahead with four kilometers to go, but the live data strongly suggested that the lead was shrinking. And so it was. BMC's time was 8,29 seconds from Sunweb's winning time. This means that the Dutchmen Tom Dumoulin, Wilco Kelderman and Sam Oomen, as well as the German Lennard Kämna, the Dane Sören Kragh Andersen and the Australian Michael Matthews are the new world champions in the team time trial. Silver goes to BMC, bronze to Sky. The second German team, Bora-hansgrohe, played no role without Peter Sagan, who was ill, and ended up tenth.

Sunweb also triumphs in the women's category - bronze for Cervelo-Bigla

True to the motto ladies first the women started before the men. At 12:10 p.m. Virtu Cycling – formerly Veloconcept – was the first team to take to the track. The Danish team, which has been under the direction of Bjarne Riis for about a year, finished fifth at the end of the day, almost three minutes behind. Others should be fighting for the medals, such as the two German teams Canyon SRAM Racing and Cervélo-Bigla Pro Cycling, which finished 1:05 minutes and 28 seconds behind in fourth and third place. The Germans Stephanie Pohl, Lisa Klein and Clara Koppenburg, as well as the Finn Lotta Lepistö, the Danish Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig and the South African Ashleigh Moolman can thus record the first medal at the World Championships in Bergen for Germany. However, the record time set shortly before by the Dutch team Sunweb could not be broken. But the women from the Dutch team Boels-Dolmans probably assumed that. Last year's winners were determined to defend their title. In the end, however, twelve seconds were missing because Sunweb managed the 42,5-kilometer course better.

#Bergen2017 Perfect pacing and strong teamwork leads to a team time trial gold medal. Catch up in our report.
