Cycling: Former ski jumper Primoz Roglic (LottoNL-Jumbo) won today's stage of the Tour de France. The Slovenian broke away from a strong leading group on the Col du Galibier and triumphed as a soloist. Meanwhile, Chris Froome (Sky) didn't let anything burn in the fight for the yellow jersey. However, Fabio Aru (Astana) lost time. Marcel Kittel (Quick-Step Floors) had to give up the Tour de France after a fall.
Marcel Kittel crashes and has to give up in the green jersey
Yesterday, viewers got on the 16st stage to see a wind spectacle. Today was a mountain stage. From La Mure, the route took the peloton over 183 kilometers to Serre-Chevalier. On the way there were four mountain classifications to cross, including the well-known climbs Col de la Croix de Fer, Col du Télégraphe and Col du Galibier. Unfortunately, Marcel Kittel (Quick-Step Floors) should not arrive at the destination. The man in green fell. He then tried to bite his way through for many more kilometers. Finally, the bad news came through: Marcel Kittel gave up. The Tour de France lost another top star. Previously had to Peter Sagan (Bora-hansgrohe), Mark Cavendish (Dimension Data) Richie Porte (BMC), Arnaud Démare (FDJ), Geraint Thomas (Sky), Rafal Majka (Bora-hansgrohe) and Philippe Gilbert (Quick Step Floors) left the Tour of France.
Primoz Roglic breaks away from the leading group
While Team Sky took control of the peloton right after the start, a large breakaway group pulled away. There were Simon Geschke (Sunweb), Danilo Wyss (BMC), Mathias Frank (Ag2r), Michael Gogl (Trek-Segafredo), Serge Pauwels (Dimension Data), Primoz Roglic (LottoNL-Jumbo), Darwin Atapuma (UAE), Bauke Mollema (Trek-Segafredo), Esteban Chaves (Orica-Scott) and Alberto Contador (Trek-Segafredo). As in ours Preview of the 17th stage As already suspected, Michael Matthews (Sunweb) snuck into the escape group. The Australian secured the 20 points in the sprint classification and will now probably win the green jersey. In the course of the stage, the 33-strong lead group flew further and further apart. Primoz Roglic was finally able to pull away up to the Col du Galibier.
Fabio Aru gets into trouble at the Col du Galibier
Daniel Martin (Quick-Step Floors) used the Col du Galibier to attack. However, the Irishman could not break away from the severely decimated group of favorites. There, all professionals had to struggle up the mountain without a teammate. Only Chris Froome (Sky) could still rely on the support of Mikel Landa (Sky). After an attack by Romain Bardet (Ag2r), Daniel Martin, Fabio Aru (Astana), Simon Yates (Orica-Scott) and Louis Meintjes (UAE), among others, got into trouble. In the downhill, there was an interesting chase for every second. Primoz Roglic also had to fear for a win, because his lead at the summit was less than two minutes. However, the time trial specialist skilfully played off his qualities on the descent and secured the stage victory. Second was Rigoberto Uran in front of Chris Froome. The group around Aru could no longer establish the connection. That moves Uran up to second and Aru stumbles off the podium. Simon Yates was hit even harder. The Brit finished even later and now has to worry about the white jersey. He is now only around two and a half minutes ahead of Louis Meintjes.
