The ultracycling scene mourns the loss of one of its most influential figures. The Brit Mike Hall was not only active as a driver himself in countless races - among other things he won the notorious Tour Divide - but the 35-year-old also organized events around the world again and again. Now Mike died in a traffic accident during the night as part of the Indian Pacific Wheel Race. The collision happened at 6:20 a.m. (local time) near the Australian city of Canberra.
The race has since been canceled and the organizers released the following statement:
“The Indian Pacific Wheel Race joins family and friends in mourning the loss of Mike Hall. Mike died in an accident involving a vehicle earlier this morning.
Our condolences go to Mike's family in particular, but also to everyone who knew him. He will be sorely missed.
Mike lived the spirit and adventure of ultracycling events. His efforts for the scene and for each individual driver will not be forgotten.
This tragedy is a terrible loss to the cycling community worldwide.
