Market: With the Canyon Offspring AL 16, Offspring AL 20 and the Grand Canyon AL 24, Canyon presented mountain bikes for children for the first time in its history. Modern equipment meets low weight at an attractive price/performance ratio that is typical of Canyon.
New territory for the Koblenz direct mailer Canyon! While the company was already very broadly positioned in many other two-wheeler areas, there was a gap in the portfolio for those who are not yet ready for a full-blown bike. With three models from 16 to 24″, there will now also be the right Canyon bike for the kids out there in the future – true to the motto “This world needs young heroes...”
All three kids' bikes are mountain bikes: the two small Offspring AL 16 and Offspring AL 20 offer an attractive introduction to the world of "real" mountain bikes, while the 24″ model Canyon Grand Canyon AL 24 is already the bridge to adult bikes beats. The development process took three years - 36 months, during which the focus was primarily on the correct geometry in order to be able to give the little ones a safe driving experience from an early age.
The result is a rather long wheelbase for all bikes and a fairly flat steering angle of 68°. This ensures that it runs very smoothly, even if the pilot unintentionally switches to "rolling mode". In addition, the top tube of all models is pulled low so that, if the worst comes to the worst, you can always safely climb down over the saddle and put your feet on the ground.

The choice of wheel size for the smallest model, the Canyon Offspring AL 16, is interesting. As the name suggests, this comes with a 16″ rear wheel, but the larger 18″ size is used at the front. How come? With larger wheels, the rollover behavior on uneven terrain is greatly improved and thanks to the small rear wheel, the main frame can still remain nice and compact.
Of course, some thought has also been given to the other equipment. The decision to use hydraulic disc brakes on all models is remarkable. This is justified on the one hand with the lower manual forces, on the other hand with the good-natured dosage that hydraulic brakes offer compared to mechanical ones. In addition, special short-reach brake levers are installed so that even small hands can operate the brakes comfortably. While the 20″ and 24″ models are equipped with a 9-speed derailleur from SRAM, the smallest Canyon offspring has a SRAM Automatix hub that switches between the two available gears automatically, depending on the speed.
Safety also plays a very important role with children's bikes. That's why all sharp-edged areas of the bikes are fitted with rubber covers - for example on the stem or on the handlebar ends.
Incidentally, all Canyon children's MTBs come with a specially developed bike guard for easy and gentle transport. The two Canyon Offspring models will be available from the end of March, the Grand Canyon AL 24 from the beginning of May. The official launch will take place next weekend as part of the Berlin Bicycle Show. We will be there and provide you with the first impressions of the Canyon children's MTBs. There will also be an opportunity to test ride the bikes.
