Clothing: Test: MET Strale – Always keep a cool head!

March 19, 2017 by Florian Nowak

Test: With the MET Strale, the helmet outfitter of the WorldTour Team Dimension Data has launched a new flagship model in the middle price segment. A special ventilation system combined with good aerodynamics and low weight should offer everything a safe helmet needs today. We tested the MET Strale.

The biggest innovation in the MET Strale seems to be the new ventilation system. The so-called Venturi effect is used here, in which fresh air enters the helmet via an air channeling system and warm air is released again. The design has been adapted to allow cool air to enter the helmet via a large central air duct along with a number of side ducts, maximizing overall ventilation. Thanks to this Venturi effect, the warm air exits through a rear opening and pushes it away from the rider. In the test, you could literally feel how the ventilation system works and how the air is transported over your head. Hardly any sweat formed on the forehead, which otherwise often drips onto the glasses. Despite the good ventilation, you don't have the feeling that it's pulling too much.

When designing the MET Strale, special attention was paid not only to ventilation but also to aerodynamics. The openings on the front have been reduced to 8 and the teardrop-shaped design of the top model MET Manta has been retained. From a purely subjective point of view, we could not find any noticeable difference compared to pure aero helmets. At 255 grams in size medium, the Strale is one of the lighter aero helmet models.

The fit of the MET Strale is very comfortable, which is particularly due to its Safe-T Duo Fit System, which allows for micro-metric adjustment and 4 height adjustments. In addition, the Strale has a built-in lock for additional security, as this is intended to prevent slipping out in the event of a fall. The side straps can be adjusted as you like and can also be adjusted in the area around the ears/jaws to prevent unpleasant rubbing. Unfortunately, the straps are very stiff at first, which gives you the feeling that the helmet doesn't fit properly.

We also noticed a bit negatively that the helmet is only available in the sizes medium (52-58) and large (59-62) and is therefore not suitable for some people with a smaller head circumference. In addition, due to the shape, people with a very round head may have problems with the fit. From a purely visual point of view, there are 7 color variations, so there should be something for every taste.

As a feature to further improve safety, the MET Strale is equipped with a reflective sticker on the back and an LED light-compatible fastening system.

Conclusion: MET Strale

The MET Strale combines everything a good helmet needs: protection, aerodynamics, good ventilation and minimal weight. In the price segment below 100 € you will not find a competitive helmet with a corresponding price-performance ratio so quickly. The Strale also has a lot to offer visually, only the uncomfortable side straps pull the overall impression down a bit.

More than Florian Nowak

Florian Nowak is a professional cyclist at the EuropeTour level and has competed in many international races. At the German championship in 2017, he was the best non-WorldTour professional in 7th place and was therefore able to recommend himself for the Tour de L'Avenir and the World Championships. But he doesn't just feel comfortable on the racing bike, he's also always drawn to off-road terrain. In addition to sport, he works on his second mainstay and has completed his business administration studies at the LMU Munich.
