Product news: Canyon Ultimate CF EVO presented – frame weight of 665 grams!

February 2, 2017 by the editorial office

Market: In its current form in 2017, the Canyon Ultimate CF SLX is now in its third model year and is still considered by many to be one of the best racing bikes currently available. Today, the manufacturer from Koblenz surprised everyone with the presentation of the Canyon Ultimate CF EVO - the new model is Canyon's answer to the question it asked itself: "How close can we get to the perfect road bike?"

The development department of the German direct seller is flexing its muscles with the new Canyon Ultimate CF Evo. Canyon proudly describes the new model as the “top of the road bike evolution” and a statement of “how a high-end road bike should look these days.” The key data of the Ultimate CF Evo, which is initially available in two premium model variants and as a frame set read impressively: A frame weight of 665 grams (+ 270 grams fork) without having to compromise on rigidity or durability, according to Canyon, is an announcement that should cause a stir in many places.

The idea for the Canyon Ultimate CF EVO came up during the development of the current Ultimate CF SLX. The fact that the development now took so much time was partly due to the fact that you work with carbon fibers that have never been used in the industry before. The secret of the extremely low weight and high rigidity also lies in these fibers. This high-tech carbon layup was not only used for the frame itself, but also for the fork, seat post and cockpit.

Canyon Ultimate CF EVO – Two model variants from 4,96kg and €10.000

Of course, such a high-tech frame also requires a corresponding structure. This is why the cheapest of the two currently available model variants, namely the Canyon Ultimate CF EVO 10.0 SL, costs €10.000, while the Ultimate CF EVO 10.0 LTD even costs €13.000. But you also get noble add-on parts, among others from Clavicula and Lightweight and a total weight from 4,96 kg. The SL variant aims to appeal to lightweight construction fans, while the LTD model represents the pinnacle of what is currently feasible.

Canyon Ultimate CF EVO 10.0 SL – the lightweight

Canyon's new bullet weighs less than 5kg. The ultra-light frame is complemented by, among other things, Meileinstein Obermayer wheels from Lightweight, a SRAM Red drive, Clavicula crank and the in-house integrated cockpit. Cost: €10.000

Canyon Ultimate CF EVO 10.0 LTD – high-tech bolide for €13.000

The new spearhead of the Canyon road bike program is called Ultimate CF EVO 10.0 LTD. This is where high-tech fans get their money's worth: SRAM eTap group, Clavicula M³ crank with SRM power meter and Lightweight Milestone wheels make almost every racing bike fan's mouth water. At 5,8kg, it weighs a little more than the lightweight SL model and is also a good chunk more expensive at €13.000.

Canyon Ultimate SL EVO Framset – for the individualists

But if you prefer to build such a noble frame yourself or if you don't like the Canyon Edel variants or if they are too expensive, you can also use the bare frame set with fork, seat post and the integrated cockpit and complete it according to your own ideas. Available for mechanical and electronic groupsets, the initial investment of €3.299 is not quite as high as for complete bikes.
