Cycling: Greg Van Avermaet (BMC) has again won the classic Omloop Het Nieuwsblad ahead of Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe). As in the previous year, these two proved to be the strongest drivers in the field. Sep Vanmarcke (Cannondale) came in third. Meanwhile, Tom Boonen (Quick-Step Floors) fell in a mass crash but will probably compete in Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne tomorrow.
From Ghent to Ghent via 13 slipways & 10 pavé sections
This Saturday, the cycling circus started the 72 classic season with the 2017nd edition of Omloop Het Nieuwsblad. For the first time, the race is part of the WorldTour. However, not all WorldTour teams have confirmed their participation. At least 15 teams from the highest league of road cycling were still at the start. This was held in Gent, where 198 kilometers later the winner of the day was to be chosen. On the way, however, no fewer than 13 slipways and 10 pavé sections had to be completed. At the beginning of the race there were several attacks, as many teams didn't want to miss the opportunity of a breakaway triumph. Ultimately, the group of the day only stood after about 80 kilometers. The six professionals Mike Teunissen (Sunweb), Preben Van Hecke (Sport Vlaanderen-Baloise), Brian Van Goethem (Roompot-Nederlandse Loterij), Leigh Howard (Aqua Blue Sport), Gediminas Bagdonas (Ag2r La Mondiale) and Justin Jules (WB Veranclassic ) pulled away from the peloton.
Van Avermaet defends his title
The leading group quickly gained a lead. But as expected, the peloton didn't let them go in the end. The preliminary decision was made on the Taaienberg, where the main field was properly selected and the favorites placed at the front. Tom Boonen, who was one of the victims in a mass fall, could no longer be there. It quickly became apparent that Van Avermaet, Sagan and Vanmarcke should be the strongest today. Gradually the escapees were caught up. On the Molenberg, Vanmarcke pushed the pace again, so that the last two escapees, Teunissen and Jules, also had to give up. Only Sagan and Van Avermaet could follow him. The three classic car specialists could now share the podium places. However, none of them was able to break free, so that a sprint decision was ultimately made. Olympic champion Van Avermaet again proved to be the fastest. Sagan was only second again, ahead of Vanmarcke. Marcus Burghardt took 17th place as the best German.
Van Avermaet:For me, this is a perfect start to the season. It's a wonderful feeling. Last year I started the season with a big win. It's always nice to come back and celebrate your first win on home soil.
