Cycling: New name, new mission? The German team Sunweb (formerly Giant-Alpecin) is gradually making the transition from chasing daily victories to the big tours. Nevertheless, the departure of John Degenkolb to Trek-Segafredo was almost equal.

Team Sunweb 2017: ready for the big hit?

The year 2016 was quite successful for Giant-Alpecin. With two stage victories each in the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia, the team could convince on the big stage. Overall, however, they only clinched 15 victories this season, of which five victories alone can be attributed to Maximilian Walscheid at the Tour of Hainan. Nevertheless, the results have to be seen from a different angle, as several strong drivers were involved in a serious accident with a car in practice at the start of the season and retired. John Degenkolb got caught too. It wasn't until the end of the season that he really got going, winning the Munsterland Giro and a stage in the Arctic Race of Norway. There is still room for improvement for the coming season. Unfortunately, the German team Sunweb had to deal with the departure of John Degenkolb in 2017. The resulting free space is filled by Michael Matthews. Actually a quite plausible transfer, because the Australian is a similar type, at least in the sprint area. On cobbles, however, he hasn't played nearly as well as the German.

In general, the development of the entire team seems to be going in the direction of the classification driver. With Tom Dumoulin they now have a serious contender for a Grand Tour podium in their ranks. Warren Barguil has played a good role in the mountains for years anyway. Sunweb also has a huge talent up his sleeve in Sam Oomen. The newcomer Wilco Keldermann also fits in perfectly with this new orientation. Like Tom Dumoulin, he is considered an excellent time trialist with good qualities in the mountains. From a German point of view, we can be especially excited about the performance of Lennard Kämna. The young German is considered a huge talent in time trials. With Dumoulin and Kelderman he definitely has the right men at his side to take the next step.
