General: Kumpan: E-scooters with a vintage look for clean air

September 29, 2016 by the editorial office

Spektrum: The startup Kumpan has been building classic scooters for more than five years, but they are powered by an electric drive instead of a combustion engine. In a way, they are building the New Mobility bridge between the e-bike and the electric car - reason enough for us to think outside the box and, for once, deal with a two-wheeler without pedals.

Currently running on the Crowd investing platform Companisto growth financing for the startup founded in 2010. You want to develop beyond national borders and make the advantages of electric scooters public in other European countries. It is obvious that city dwellers in particular could benefit from the e-scooters: the vehicles are not only much more lively and cheaper to maintain, but also protect the environment. Also in the sensitive point of range one is at least on par with the counterparts that still work with fossil fuels.

The retro-look exterior gives little indication of the modern technology hidden inside: the heart, i.e. the motor, is located in the rear wheel hub and gets its energy from battery packs of different sizes, which can be charged at any conventional socket. The third important component, the controller, ensures that the power ends up where it belongs – namely on the road. Kumpan promises that this system is almost maintenance-free, meaning that only brake discs, pads and tires are subject to normal wear and tear.

From a purely legal point of view, the Kumpan scooters are mopeds: With the appropriate test certificate and up to 25km/h, you can take a seat on them from the age of 15, and from the age of 16 with a scooter license also up to 45km/h. Incidentally, the e-companion costs around 4.000 euros, depending on the equipment. So nothing more than a high-quality e-bike.
