cycling: Eneco Tour stage #7: Terpstra takes overall victory, Boasson Hagen the stage

September 25, 2016 by Editors

Cycling: On the 7th stage of the Eneco Tour, Niki Terpstra (Etixx-Quick Step) secured overall victory with second place. The Dutchman was only beaten by Boasson Hagen (Dimension Data) on the final stage.

Niki Terpstra triumphs at the Eneco Tour

The 12th edition of the Eneco Tour should be decided today in Geraardsbergen. In the end, another 197,8 kilometers had to be covered from Bornem to Geraardsbergen. The highlight was the famous wall of Geraardsbergen, which cycling fans should be familiar with from the Tour of Flanders. In the end, three drivers fought for the day's victory up there. Edvald Boasson Hagen was the fastest man in the sprint, but second-placed Niki Terpstra also had reason to celebrate: He gained enough time over his competitors, who were still ahead of him in the overall standings, to move up from fifth place to first .

Rohan Dennis with a lot of bad luck

The top three before the stage, however, even flew out of the top ten. Oliver Naesen (IAM) was third in the stage, but was able to move up to second place in the classification and thus celebrate the greatest success of his career so far. World and European champion Peter Sagan (Tinkoff) had to admit defeat. The Slovak was sixth in the stage and still ended up on the podium of the Eneco Tour. The previous overall leader Rohan Dennis (BMC) was far less fortunate, because a fall 50 kilometers from the finish meant he lost all chances of a top placing. Jasha Sütterlin (Movistar) was able to hope for a good result until shortly before the finish, but then lost contact with the leading group.
