cycling: Christoph Strasser tackles the 24 hour world record on the track

August 10, 2016 by the editorial office

Cycling: The Austrian extreme athlete Christoph Strasser will be on 15./16. Tackle the 24-hour world record on the track at the Velodrome Suisse Grenchen in October. It was not until 2015 that the 33-year-old broke the record on the street in Berlin. 896,173 km were on the clock after 24 hours - the previous bar of 903 km is now to fall on the track.

Actually, Strasser really wanted to set the track world record in his home town of Vienna: However, scheduling difficulties in the Dusika Stadium, a high level of bureaucracy and the significantly faster track in Grenchen ultimately decided that the 24-hour sound barrier should now be broken in the neighboring country . The challenge for Strasser is huge - after all, until recently he was only at home on the road: “It was only a few months ago that I rode the track for the first time and after just a few laps I realized how tough it was going to be. But it is precisely this great respect that is important in order to give one’s best in preparation.”

The current record of 903 km dates back to 2010 and was set by the Slovenian Marko Baloh. To illustrate the dimensions of the undertaking: If Strasser wants to be the new record holder on October 16th, he has to do 3.615 laps on the 250m long track in Grenchen – with a maximum lap time of 24 seconds. The ride on the track not only places huge mental demands on the athlete, the body is also stressed differently than on the road: "The holding muscles in the upper body and the seat are much more stressed by the forces in the curves," explains Strasser. With 3.615 laps, the Austrian has to take the corners of the Veledrome Suisse 7.230 times – unbelievable numbers.

Strasser is currently contesting the Race Around Austria and will then devote himself entirely to preparing for the world record attempt.
