Spectrum: The number of bicycle thefts in Germany has fallen slightly, but is still at a high level, especially in large cities. The comparison portal Check24 has processed the data from the Federal Criminal Police Office from 2015 and created a map of Germany that shows where you run the greatest risk of becoming a victim of bicycle theft.
It's every bike owner's nightmare - you want to swing onto the saddle and suddenly the bike isn't where you left it. Bicycle thefts are unfortunately almost part of everyday life, especially in big cities. This is also shown by the data from the Federal Criminal Police Office from 2015: Although the total number of bicycle thefts fell somewhat, there is a great risk of becoming a victim of bicycle thieves, especially in metropolises such as Berlin and Hamburg, but also in Leipzig.
Also interesting is the data from Check24 regarding the household contents insurance policies taken out in the respective cities and federal states, which also include bicycles. According to the list of the 15 largest cities in Germany, the most bicycles were insured on average in Leipzig - but with good reason: nowhere else in Germany are so many bicycles stolen per 100.000 inhabitants. In the Saxon city there were over 2015 cases in 1.200. On the other hand, the bikes are safest in the two southern German cities of Munich and Stuttgart: In the Baden-Württemberg state capital, only 100.000 bicycle thefts were reported per 200 inhabitants - that is 6 times less than in Leipzig.
