Cycling: Terrible news from Team Lotto Soudal. The one in May at the Tour of Belgium badly fallen Stig Broeckx is still in a coma and suffered serious brain damage from his fall, according to doctors, and it is uncertain if the Belgian will regain consciousness.
It was May 28, 2016 – during the third stage of the Tour of Belgium, two support bikes collided, skidded into the field and knocked several riders to the ground. Among them was the 26-year-old Belgian Stig Broeckx, who not only suffered fractures in his face but also serious head and skull injuries. The stage was canceled and Broeckx was immediately taken by helicopter to a special clinic in Aachen. There followed a few days later an operation to reduce the pressure in the skull, which had increased as a result of the multiple cerebral hemorrhages.
The prognosis from the doctors was not bad at first and it was quickly reported that Broeckx was no longer in mortal danger - since then it had become quiet. Now his racing team Lotto Soudal went public and announced the sad news. Accordingly, Broekx is still in a coma and does not respond to external stimuli. In addition, he would have suffered severe brain injuries, the consequences of which are not foreseeable. According to the doctors, it is also currently uncertain whether the 26-year-old will regain consciousness at all.
We wish Stig, his family and friends a lot of strength and all the best and keep our fingers crossed.
