General: Mountain Bike European Championships Sweden: German team wins bronze medal

7 May 2016 by Andrew Waldera

MTB cycling: The German team surprisingly won the bronze medal at the European Mountain Bike Championships in Jönköping, Sweden. For Sabine Spitz, who formed a team with Georg Egger, Niklas Schehl and Ben Zwiehof, it was already the 30th international medal.

Sabine Spitz was extremely satisfied after the success at the Team Relay: “Great, no one expected that after we had to switch twice. It's all the nicer that those who have now stepped in are taking home a medal.". In fact, the third place of the German team at the MTB European Championships in Sweden caused a big surprise. The men's positions could not be optimally filled - at least it seemed so in advance.

The team around the experienced Olympic champion was only beaten by the Swiss and the French, with a gap of only 6 seconds to their French neighbors. The performance of the Swiss team was outstanding, clearly winning the Team Relay with a lead of 1:09 minutes over France. For Sabine Spitz, things will get serious again tomorrow: the women's elite start at 11.30 a.m.
