Cycling: Again yesterday at Paris-Roubaix there was an ugly incident with an escort motorcycle. When the field came to a standstill in a mass crash in the Arenberg forest, a motorbike that was traveling too fast hit the riders from behind and trapped Elia Viviani (Team Sky), among others, between the motorbike and the fence. The Italian was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
That's impossible. Antoine Demoitié's tragic death was just a few weeks ago. As a result, drivers, teams and trade unions vehemently demanded from the organizers and the world association that the safety of the drivers must finally be given top priority and that there should also be a rethink in the use and organization of the support vehicles. An incident at Paris-Roubaix shows that unfortunately not much has changed: in the forest of Arenberg – one of the most difficult pavé sectors – there was a mass fall at the back of the field. This is not uncommon on the very narrow and very bad road - all the more frightening is the fact that an escort motorcycle was apparently much too close and much too fast directly behind the drivers. When the crash happened, the driver couldn't brake in time, fell and hit the back of the field. The victim was Sky professional Elia Viviani, who was pinched between the motorcycle lying on the ground and the fence and was slightly injured. He suffered bruises and cuts.
