General: Future Team Jenatec Breckle: Six Day Race Berlin

February 6, 2016 by the editorial office

Written by: Lena-Fabienne Franke and Domenik Wolf

In the last few weeks we have mainly done athletic training such as swimming, running or indoor training. This served us as preparation for our cross-country runs and athletic tests. But to relax we also drove to Frankfurt/Oder on 2 weekends and completed some track competitions there. On the other weekends we did some long bike sessions to build up basic endurance.

From Sunday, January 31.01st until Tuesday, February 2.02nd we start in Berlin at the future race of the 105th Berlin six-day race. We use this to improve our wooden railway safety and to improve our own tactical driving style. The field of drivers was international and very well staffed.

Our racing program for the three days looked like this:

  • Sunday: preliminary 20 laps, final 20 laps
  • Monday: Preliminary 30 laps points race, final 40 laps Danish points race
  • Tuesday: 50 laps points race for the first 24 in the general classification

These competitions were held as an omnium. We all reached the final on Tuesday and were able to implement our agreed offensive driving style very well in the race. Ultimately, we were able to place ourselves very well in the overall ranking.

Our overall results at a glance:

  • 3rd place Domenik Wolf
  • 6th place Paul White
  • 7th place Moritz Adam
  • 8th place Lena-Fabienne Franke
  • 18th place Nico Cherry

Meeting up with Marcel Barth, who competed in the pros in the six-day race, was also nice on Tuesday. He took a few minutes for us and even watched our race. Like us, Marcel started cycling at SSV Gera 1990 eV and has already achieved great success.

Since we had our races in the morning on Sunday, we were able to watch the pros in the afternoon and learn a few things from them.

gera4On the other two days, our races took place in the evenings, so we had plenty of time during the day. We used this on Monday to visit a puzzle room opposite the BND. There we had to solve a criminal case within an hour. It was a lot of fun and there was even some time left at the end. On Tuesday morning we took part in a guided tour of the former Stasi prison in Berlin-Hohenschönhausen. A former prisoner led the tour. We got interesting insights into German history.

After successfully leaving Berlin behind us, we drove to Schilbach in Vogtland for the rest of the week, where the rest of our training group had been in ski camp since Monday. Unfortunately, ski training was not possible due to the weather, so we did a lot of running, stair and stability training as an alternative. We think that we are now well prepared for our next competitions, the cross-country race in Altenburg (February 13.02th) and the athletics test in Erfurt (February 21.02st).
