General: Prostyle Cycle Camp with TUI Cruises logbook #5: Dream tour on Tenerife

21 November 2015 by Michael Faiss

Blog: What a day at the Prostyle Cycle Camp in Tenerife. Although there were a few meters of altitude difference today, which hurt some on the fourth day, a breathtaking view and picture-book panoramas made up for every single drop of sweat.

The start of the day was just as relaxed as in the past few days: After we had prepared ourselves for the tour at one of the numerous breakfast buffets, we met at 9:00 a.m. at the pier and rolled off together at 9:30 a.m. comfortably.

A tour to the notorious Teide was originally planned for today, but the prostyle guides refrained from doing it a long time ago. On the one hand, at 17:30 p.m. it's time to say 'All aboard' and on the other hand, the legs of some participants are pretty heavy – no wonder, after all, a good 5.000 meters in altitude have accumulated in the past three days.

The alternative route is about 70km and a little more than 1.000hm into the interior of the island. In addition, there was also a 'cappuccino group' today that cycled leisurely to the beach and back – for those, a very relaxed 30km was on the agenda.

As on Madeira, we had an escort vehicle available today, which not only carried food in the form of gels, bars and water, but also provided great opportunities for taking photos. After a few kilometers, the riders passed the city limits of Santa Cruz and pretty much at that moment things started to go uphill.

Even if today's climb was as long as that on Madeira a few days ago, it was much less steep today, rarely exceeding 10%. The narrow lane meandered up the green hill and offered a truly breathtaking view down to the coast at almost every bend.

The sweat was also pouring down because of the bright sunshine, but when the entire group had reached the top and looked down from the vantage point into the endless green of the valley, the efforts were quickly forgotten.

In any case, today and yesterday it was nice to see how the individual groups found each other in the field of participants. There is joking, cheering, pushing, braking - the past few days have welded together and certainly produced one or the other friendship.

From the top, a moderately steep descent then descended into the valley of La Laguna. However, caution was required here, as the road is partly in the shade all day and is covered with moss: acute risk of slipping! Fortunately, all participants came down safely and without falling.

Once at the bottom, the tour led to the lively university town of La Laguna. As a reward and at the end of the tour, coffee, espresso, cake and other delicacies were served in one of the many small streets of the old town. The mood was excellent because of the extremely successful day.

The afternoon program on Mein Schiff 4 was extremely relaxed and there was a choice of pool, sauna, swimming pool, sun deck or or... In the evening, almost 20 participants gathered in one of the conference rooms where there was a small film evening. A half-hour report on the Tour Transalp left one or the other mouth open.

Tomorrow the last stage is already waiting: It goes to Fuerteventura, the island of the wind - not for nothing a popular training place for many triathletes. Again there will be two routes to choose from - 110 or 80km over flat undulating terrain will surely provide a high speed finale to the Prostyle Cycle Camp.
