Test drive: With the G7 Disc, the traditional Spanish manufacturer BH presents a lively aero racer with disc brakes. The test bike was a pre-production model; but it was still obvious that this bike has great potential.
In 1909 the brothers Domingo, Juan and Cosme Beistegui began producing weapons in the Basque Country. After the end of the First World War, they switched to bicycles. A wise decision, because today BH is one of the largest bicycle manufacturers in Spain. BH stands for Beistegui Hermanos, in German the Beistegui brothers. The company name is pronounced "Beh Atsche" in Spanish. The brand deserves a higher level of awareness in Germany, as it has an enormous range of models: BH offers fitness, urban and e-bikes, plus fixies, BMX bikes and children's bikes, but also mountain bikes, racing bikes and triathlon machines in all imaginable variations and for every budget. German counterparts would be Cube or Stevens, for example.
Aero racer G7 Disc
At the Eurobike demo day we were very excited about the brand new aero racer G7 Disc. This is a further development of the aerodynamic flagship G6 with classic rim brakes. The carbon frame – with the steeply sloping top tube typical of BH – has now been optimized to accommodate disc brakes. To enable the installation of 140 millimeter disc brakes with Shimano flat mount technology at the front and rear, the engineers completely redesigned the rear end. It is designed to perfectly process the forces and tensions created by the new disc brake anchorage - BH emphasizes that safety was one of the central development goals for the G7 Disc.
The fact that this is an aero racer catches the eye: narrow at the front, flat from the side, this is how the tube cross-sections are presented. The tapered head tube and the continuous, wide seat tube, which flows directly into the seat dome with a flat seat post, are eye-catchers. Cables and cables integrated into the frame are now standard and are also a matter of course on the BH bike. 12 mm thru-axles fix the wheels, the crank rotates in the Press Fit BB386 bottom bracket. The lifelong guarantee that BH grants is by no means a matter of course - the prerequisite is that the product has been purchased from an authorized dealer or via direct mail.
Sports cannon with great forward drive
A mechanical Shimano Ultegra groupset with RS505 hydraulic disc brakes was mounted on the test bike. The crank was an FSA SLK. The saddle came from San Marco, the add-on parts and the high-profile carbon rims are BH products. This combination results in an aero racer that is well constructed, visually appealing and reasonably light.
The test drive revealed a lot of light and was really fun. The BH product managers emphasized that this G7 is a pre-series model that should not be "really abused" yet. Of course, the brakes weren't optimally adjusted and something was rattling in the wheels. But once in the saddle, the bike turned out to be a veritable sports cannon with great forward thrust and a high fun factor. The seating position is sporty, even racing-oriented, and a short head tube puts the driver in a flat, aerodynamic position. The steering is very agile, and the bike reacts immediately to acceleration. We would have liked to have ventured onto a winding criterium course. The hotspur is almost too good for the leisurely Sunday ride, it unfolds its full potential at high speeds. The clearly audible thundering sound of the high-profile rims is also animating. Perfectly adjusted, it is a great racing machine that makes you want high speed and competition.
Equipment variants and prices
The G7 Disc is available in four versions: with Shimano Dura Ace DI2 for a whopping 7.999 euros, as an SRAM Red model for 6.499 euros and in two Ultegra versions (as DI2 6.499 euros and in the tested mechanical version for 4.999 euros). If you don't like the disc brake trend on racing bikes, you will find BH's aero racer in the G6 Pro with classic rim brakes. An Ultegra DI2 version costs 5.299 euros, the variant with a mechanical Ultegra version is available for 4.099 euros.
