July 16, 2015 by Marcus Degen

Market: Cities and conurbations in Germany and Europe are increasingly having to contend with the consequences of steadily increasing traffic volumes. Congested roads, fine dust pollution and increased accident statistics are just some of the consequences. More and more people are therefore deciding to plunge into the urban jungle on an e-bike. The Lower Franconian manufacturer Winora is taking this development into account and is presenting the two new models Radius and Radar, two dedicated e-bikes for city use.

Before the final models and specifications of the new urban bikes are presented at the Eurobike at the end of August, Winora gave a number of selected guests a detailed look at the new bikes and the idea behind them last weekend in Schweinfurt. As different as Radar and Radius may be visually and conceptually, they are both aimed at the modern city dweller and their very special requirements for an e-bike.

Winora Radius – Mobility is key

At first glance, the new Winora Radius almost looks like a classic folding bike: 20″ tires, complex frame construction and an overall extremely compact look are reminiscent of the folding bikes that are particularly popular in big cities. Even if the Winora does not have a full-fledged folding mechanism on the Radius, it is characterized by many features that are otherwise only found on Birdy, Dahon and Co: The handlebars can be folded away to the side in seconds, and they fold in the same way Pedal away with a bold upward push. The dimensions of the radius shrink in just a few simple steps and without a complex folding mechanism.

The compact shape of the Radius is intended to fulfill several functions: On the one hand, the chic black vehicle can be stowed away safely and in a space-saving manner in a big city apartment. Pushed upright behind the cupboard until the next use. In addition, the Radius can also be carried on public transport: Thanks to the only 20″ large wheels, it is also free of charge in most cities. An advantage that should not be underestimated.

The Winora Radius is powered by a Yamaha PW mid-engine with 250 watts and a battery with 400Wh provides the power supply. A hub gear and disc brakes are used in all equipment variants. The prices for the Radius start at 2.199 euros.

Winora Radar – E-Bike 2.0

The also brand new Winora Radar follows a slightly different concept. The full-grown urban bike convinces with a clean and unobtrusive look, despite the motor and battery. This is made possible on the one hand by the space-saving TranzX M25GT mid-motor and on the other hand by the 500Wh battery integrated into the frame. Thanks to a two-chamber system inside, the battery disappears completely in the down tube without sacrificing stability.

As classic as the radar may look, there are so many technical innovations and innovations in the matt black city runabout. The big highlight is the firmly integrated, brand new COBI system. We had already reported on the features and advantages of COBI at the very beginning of the start-up, meanwhile the industry has also become aware of the innovative interface between bike and smartphone. Basically, COBI is a mobile phone holder that makes the features of modern smartphones usable for use on the bike. The light sensor dims the integrated LED lighting, GPS and acceleration sensors provide information about the journey and much more. In combination with an e-bike such as the radar, the drive can also be controlled via COBI.

In addition to this technical highlight, other modern features of the Radar seem almost ordinary: internally routed cables and cables, the confectioned head tube and thru axles at the front and rear underline Winora's intention to bring a state-of-the-art urban bike with drive onto the market. The manufacturer from Lower Franconia takes a somewhat unusual approach to the wheels: 27,5″ balloon tires are used – a conscious decision was made against the 28″ wheels that are otherwise common on city bikes. By using the large-volume balloon tires, however, the circumference corresponds to that of conventional 28″ tires – but with comparatively much improved comfort.

The Winora Radar will be available in four different configurations - Plain, Tour, Urban and Speed. All models come with COBI integration (in different versions) and a high-quality Shimano XT drive. However, the area of application differs: The Radar Urban comes with mudguards integrated into the design, the Tour version also has a luggage rack and the Radar Speed is a full-fledged S-Pedelec with motor support of up to 45km/h.
The prices for the radar start at 3.199 euros.
