Cycling: Today the participants of the Tour of Bavaria traveled from Waldsassen over hilly terrain to Selb, a town in the Fichtelgebirge near the Czech border. After he had to give way to Nacer Bouhanni (Cofidis) and Sam Bennett (Bora-Argon 18) yesterday, John Degenkolb (Giant-Alpecin) could not be denied the day's win today.
Today's stage profile was perfect for John Degenkolb, who grew up in Bavaria: wavy, a constant up and down through the Fichtelgebirge and a slightly uphill home stretch that invites you to sprint - in many ways today's stage of the Bayern Tour was similar to the spring classics where "Dege" was already so successful this year. It was therefore not surprising that, like yesterday, he was one of the drivers at the top again, but today neither yesterday's winner, Sam Bennett, nor perhaps the second strongest sprinter in the field, Nacer Bouhanni, had anything to oppose him: Degenkolb crossed the finish line first, just behind Bouhanni, third was Movistar's Enrique Sanz, ahead of Sam Bennett in fourth.
At the same time, Degenkolb also takes over the yellow jersey of the overall leader, which has to be defended tomorrow on another demanding and mountainous 200 km to Ebern near Bamberg.
