Cycling: The Belgian Yves Lampaert, starting for the Etixx-Quick Step Team, was able to win the overall victory of the Driedaagse van West-Vlaanderen in front of his home crowd. After his victory on the second day of the tour, eleventh place was enough for him to defend his overall lead yesterday.
The 3-stage race in Middelkerke started on Friday with the prologue over 7 kilometers, which the Russian time trial specialist Anton Vorobyev (Team Katusha) won. With a deficit of more than 7 seconds, the eventual overall winner of the Driedaagse van West-Vlaanderen drove to fourth place behind second-placed Jesse Sergent (Trek Factory Team) and third-placed Jan Barta (Bora-Argon 18).
The second stage on Saturday took the peloton over 174 kilometers from Bruges to Harelbeke. In the sprint, Yves Lampaert was able to hold his own against Tosh van der Sande (Lotto-Soudal) and Sander Cordeel (Vastgoedservice-Golden Palace) and thus took the lead in the overall classification. Anton Vorobyev slipped to second place overall with an 8-second jump.
The cyclists had to cover 184,5 kilometers on yesterday's stage from Nieuwport to Ichtegem. The Dutchman Danny van Poppel won the final stage of the Driedaagse van West-Vlaanderen. Second in the last stage was Belgian Kris Boeckmans (Lotto-Soudal), third place went to Michael van Staeyen from Team Cofidis, also from Belgium.
In the overall standings, Anton Vorobyev remained in second place behind Yves Lampaert. Jesse Sergent was third overall, while Jan Barta was fourth at the same time.
