Cycling: The last race of the Superprestige series was held yesterday in Middelkerke, Belgium. The Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel (Team BKCP-Powerplus) can celebrate as the overall winner, who was able to break the Belgians' successful streak.
The racing series, in which the Belgian drivers very often emerged as overall winners, has been held since the 1982/83 season. In the last 10 years alone, the Belgian Sven Nys has been able to win nine times. Only the Czech Zdenek Stybar was able to provide variety on the top podium in the 2009/2010 season - and since yesterday Mathieu van der Poel. At 20 years old, this season's winner is also the youngest ever Superprestige winner.
At the end of the series in Middelkerke, 30-year-old Kevin Pauwels from the Sunweb-Napoleon Games team was able to win the day in front of a home crowd and ultimately took second place in the overall standings. The drivers kept up the tension throughout the eight-round series until the end. In the end, van der Poel was only 1 point ahead of Pauwels. Third in the series was Lars van der Haar, six points behind the runner-up.
