Test: The German component specialist Acros from Renningen has made a name for itself with the production of high-quality headsets, bottom brackets and hubs. The Swabian company also has pedals in its portfolio. With the Acros A-Flat MD platform pedal, the manufacturer addresses bikers in the All Mountain, Enduro and Freeride sectors.

Construction and design of the pedal

The tread of the pedal body has large recesses. In connection with the narrow bridges and the low overall height of 18 mm, the pedal looks downright filigree. The pre-assembled pins, on the other hand, are not filigree. There are only 8 pins per side, but they protrude 5 mm in height. The four outer pins are M4 screws mounted from below, the four inner 4 mm grub screws are screwed into the pedal body from above. The aluminum pedal body rotates around a Cr-Mo axle. For the bearings, the manufacturer uses an extra long plain bearing and a stainless steel industrial ball bearing, double sealed.

Before the test / visual impression

The Acros A-Flat MD platform pedal convinces with a very clean workmanship. No burrs or sharp edges cause displeasure here. The pedal is available in black, red and blue anodised. With a determined weight of 352 grams, the pair is only 12 grams more than the value specified by the manufacturer. The pedal rotates without resistance, but stops immediately when not under load. The pins that are screwed on from below could prove to be disadvantageous when replacing them. If the upper part is bent or damaged due to hard ground contact, it must be removed with a saw. The height of the screws can be easily shortened with the enclosed washers.

The Acros A-Flat MD platform pedal inspires with enormous grip from the very first few meters. The pins literally bite into the sole of the shoe. As soon as the foot is put down, slipping is almost impossible. The pedal confirms this impression in all weather conditions: It doesn't matter whether it's on a bone-dry surface, in mud or in snow, the grip on the pedal is great! In this context, the large cut-outs and the narrow bars also pay off. The minimized contact area means less friction surface and the large cut-outs reliably prevent the pedal from clogging with mud and slush. The proximity of the pedal body to the crank is striking. This is particularly noticeable when driving on slopes, because it minimizes the risk of contact.

After the test

After the test, the Acros A-Flat MD platform pedal is in good condition. The bearings don't crunch and there isn't any play either. The pins held and are complete. The pedal body only shows the usual signs of wear. Top!
