General: Chris Horner signs with Airgas-Safeway

2 December 2014 by the editorial office

Cycling: Chris Horner's agent announced last week that a deal had been struck with an American Continental team. Today the curtain was lifted: Horner will be driving for Airgas-Safeway next year.

We already reported last week that Chris Horner, winner of the Vuelta 2013, has found a new team. At that time, however, all that was known was that it was an American Continental team. Now the cat was let out of the bag and it was announced that Horner had signed a one-year contract with Airgas-Safeway.
"It's great to be part of the Airgas-Safeway team", according to Horner. "I've had a lot of successes in my career, which I'm very proud of. The next chapter of my career is not about what I can achieve as an individual. I want to give something back to the sport. There were several options for the coming season, but what made me sign with Airgas-Safeway was their commitment to supporting new, young riders.”

Airgas-Safeways aim is to take part in the big American races in 2015 and to give the new generation of drivers a platform. Chris Horner will thus take on the role of mentor and stand by the young guns' side, but he will certainly also attack one or the other stage.

“2015 will definitely be a fun year with great racing but most importantly I have a little more time for my family and our new baby who is due in January. I can't wait to race with the guys.”
