Cycling: UCI President Brian Cookson considers changing bike weight limits in UCI races.
Since the Lugano Charter of 2000, the minimum weight of racing bikes has been set at 6,8 kilograms according to the UCI regulations. However, UCI President Brian Cookson has now announced that he can certainly imagine a change to this rule, as the technology has developed significantly since the rule was set. He doesn't want to open the limit completely, but a reduction would be possible.
The cycling industry and many experts have long criticized the weight limit and would like the current rules to be lifted. However, Cookson is clearly in favor of a limit. This is necessary because strength is an important component in cycling. The President therefore does not want to risk the bicycles breaking under the athletes. – You see that kind of thing often enough when you fall.
Possible changes will probably only be implemented slowly. Before the minimum weight can be reduced, detailed analyzes must be carried out to determine how far the weight limit can be reduced. The first technical tests in this area are already underway.
