cycling: Super prestige Gieten: Matthieu van der Poel intercepts Lars van der Haar

6 October 2014 by the editorial office

Matthieu van der Poel

Cycling: At the start of the Superprestige series in Gieten, 19-year-old Dutchman Matthieu van der Poel (BKCP) celebrated his first success of the year. In the final he dismissed the long leading Lars van der Haar (Giant-Shimano), who rounded off the good performance of the Dutchman. Sven Nys (Crelan-AA Drink) finished third.

After the start, Van der Poel, Van der Haar and Tom Meeusen (Telenet-Fidea) set the pace. Later, Kevin Pauwels (Sunweb-Napoleon Games) managed to catch up to the front, from which Meeusen had dropped with a crash and Van der Poel with a defect.

Towards the middle of the race it was Van der Haar who increased the pace at the front and put Pauwels under pressure. He fell back as the race progressed and lost his position to Van der Poel and Nys, who gradually moved up to the front after a cautious start. However, Van der Haar defended this until the last lap, where he was caught by Van der Poel and relegated to second place in the sprint.

The German champion Philipp Walsleben (BKCP) was 14th.

Sanne Cant (BKCP) won the women's race ahead of Ellen Van Loy (Young Telenet-Fidea) and Sophie De Boer (Parkhotel Valkenburg).
