racing bikes: Ghost Nivolet: The Climbing Friend

10 October 2014 by the editorial office

Test: After Ghost has stepped on the gas in the MTB sector in recent years, the people from the Upper Palatinate now also want to draw attention to themselves on the road. This should succeed with the Nivolet, a bike that comes with disc brakes as well as the conventional version with rim brakes.

The name Nivolet derives from Col de Nivolet which, with a pass height of 2.600 meters, is one of the highest paved Alpine passages. We were allowed to get a mid-range model of the Nivolet look at.

equipment and practice

Our ghost Nivolet is equipped with a complete Shimano Ultegra 6800. The mechanical version switches much more crisply than its predecessor - a small revelation in this price range. The gradation is ideally chosen for mountainous terrain. Blades with a gear ratio of 50 to 34 teeth are mounted on the crank, while a cassette with 11 to 28 teeth is used at the rear.

In addition, Ghost uses some parts from its own range, more precisely the handlebar-stem combination and the seat post. Besides the Mavic ksyriumwheels, it is precisely these components that contribute to the basic weight of 6,9 kilograms.

The carbon frame itself is relatively light at just under 880 grams and is well thought out. At the front, a tapered head tube reinforces the rigidity, while the fork crown is designed in such a way that it flows elegantly into the down tube. This is also a bit more bulbous compared to the other tubes. The slim support stays wrap around the seat tube before converging at the top tube.

The look of the rather classic looking frame looks very tidy. Internally routed trains and Di2 preparation play their part. The seating position is sporty, although comfort doesn't really suffer as a result. This is mainly due to the relatively high front.

The Ghost proves itself in action Nivolet especially on climbs as a good companion. It can also be easily moved up steep ramps. Thanks to the excellent shifting, nothing stands in the way of abrupt acceleration, although there are more agile models in this regard. The steering was precise and conveyed a good level of confidence in corners.

Conclusion

Our test model came with solid equipment that was completely convincing in use. The Ghost felt particularly good in mountainous terrain Nivolet at home. Sprinters will certainly prefer a different bike. However, if you are looking for a loyal companion for everyday road cycling, you can confidently take a look at this bike - especially since it is also prepared for later updates.
