cycling: UCI World Championship: Lisa Brennauer narrowly misses second title

Cycling: Lisa Brennauer just missed her second part at the Road World Championships in Ponferrada. After a very attentive race by the German women, she was only beaten by Frenchwoman Pauline Ferrand-Prevot in the sprint. Sweden's Emma Johannson was third.

The 127-kilometer race started out in a controlled manner. The German women were at the front of the field right from the start and thus avoided the crash that 93 kilometers from the finish caused numerous favorites to run into difficulties - including Marianne Vos and Giorgia Bronzini.

Consequently, the pace was slowed down a bit in the field and they waited for the stars, who caught up again almost ten kilometers later.

After that, the teams of the favorites controlled the race, so that the excitement only really started on the last lap. This was partly due to Trixi Worrack, who kept increasing the pace and tried to make the race difficult for Brennauer.

On the last climb, a quartet with Lizzie Armitstead, Marianne Vos, Elisa Longho-Borgini and Emma Johannsen managed to get a 12-second lead over a chasing group with Brennauer and Ferrand-Prevot.

However, the unity of the quartet was broken in the last kilometer and Claudia Lichtenberg brought the group back together. In the sprint, Ferrand-Prevot then showed the best legs. Brennauer had something built in just under 300 meters before the finish, but she still managed to sprint to second place in the end - there was not much missing for second gold!
