cycling: UCI MTB World Championships: Luca Schwarzbauer takes bronze in the juniors

September 4, 2014 by the editorial office

Hafjell 3

Cycling: The German juniors were able to celebrate at the MTB World Championships in Hafjell. Luca Schwarzbauer secured bronze after an exciting race. In the end he only had to admit defeat to the Dane Simon Andreassen and the Colombian Egan Bernal.

Schwarzbauer started the race cautiously and found himself in twelfth place after the first two laps. At that point, he was already 50 seconds behind the podium. "I just thought you can't give up at a World Cup", Schwarzbauer commented on the situation.

And indeed he turned it up afterwards. The Nürtingen showed his strengths especially in the downhill passages. On the penultimate lap he was finally able to catch up with Milan Vader from the Netherlands and Egan Bernal, who were still on course for the podium. The leader, Simon Andreassen, had already rushed by then.

On the final climb, Bernal managed to shake off both Vader and the black pawn. However, he was able to fight his way back to the finish on the descent, but in the end silver was denied him by a bike length.

David Horvath completed the good performance in fifth place.
