cycling: Wallonia GP: Greg Van Avermaet stays cool

September 18, 2014 by Veit Hammer

Cycling: Belgian Greg Van Avermaet (BMC) won the Wallonia GP in Namur. In a gripping final, he prevailed against Tony Gallopin (Lotto-Belisol) and last year's winner Jan Bakelants (Omega Pharma-QuickStep).

The preliminary decision was made with almost 20 kilometers to go when Van Avermaet, together with Bakelants, Jelle Vanendert (Lotto-Belisol) and Frank Schleck, was able to break away from the field. After that Bakelants attacked several times on the way up to the citadel of Namur, but could not break away. Van Avermaet stayed calm and saved his attack for the final kilometer.

A few hundred meters from the finish, Gallopin managed to move forward from the field. Van Avermaet seized the moment and countered. Neither Gallopin nor Bakelants could match his arrival.
