Cycling: The second overseas UCI MTB World Cup is in full swing. While the XC elite started this afternoon, the sprinters completed their final runs on Friday. Catriel Soto and Jenny Rissveds got their first World Cup victories.
Argentinian Catriel Soto clinched his first XCE World Cup win last Friday. In the same final line-up as a week earlier in Mont Saint Anne, Simon Gegenheimer, Daniel Federspiel, Catriel Soto and Fabrice Mels fought for victory. Soto was the fastest in qualifying and followed a simple but effective tactic: full throttle. The South American has already made it onto the podium several times, but so far he hasn't managed to make it to the top. In Windham he attacked from the start.
Before the first corner, Gegenheimer, the winner of Mont Saint Anne, tried to overtake on the outside, but Soto defended his inside line and took a narrow lights-to-flag victory. In a thrilling sprint finish, Rose rider Gegenheimer Rag took two, followed by Mels. Federspiel lacked the breath for the finale and was already out of reach after the second corner.
The Swede Jenny Rissveds Soto did the same for the women and secured her first victory in the sprint. In the final she prevailed against Kathrin Stirnemann, who, with second place, clinched the overall World Cup victory. Canadian Cindy Montambault took third place.
