Product news: Zipp 404 Firestrike: Persistence vs Resistance

June 24, 2014 by the editorial office

404 Firestrike CCL Hero Tire

Market: Zipp brings with the 404 Fire Strike launches a new aero wheelset and wants to set new standards.

In 2010, the Firecrest wheelset set new standards in terms of speed. The rim shape was revolutionary at the time and the wheels were impressive with their extraordinary aero performance and high stability.

The new Zipp 404 Firestrike is based on exactly this rim patent. The new CFD design is said to have reduced the lateral forces by 34 percent without having a negative impact on the aero properties. These are replaced by revised ABLC (Aerodynamic Boundary Layer Control) reinforced so that the driver should be offered a new level of stability and control that has never been achieved before. The tried-and-tested Showstopper technology ensures that you don't lose it if the worst comes to the worst. The braking surface has a silicon carbide surface, which should ensure the best braking properties even in wet conditions.

The new Zipp 88/188v10 hub set, which is used in the Firestrike, is a further development of the well-known 88/188v9 version and, in combination with the Sapim CX-ray spokes, should achieve significantly higher torsional rigidity values. The preload of the bearings has also been optimized. In the future, the built-in ceramic bearings should no longer be readjusted.

According to Zipp, they have developed the most durable rim that will survive the rigors of Paris-Roubaix unscathed.
