Cycling: The Belgian Niels Albert (BKCP-Powerplus) ends his career. He and his team announced this at a press conference today. A few weeks ago, Albert was diagnosed with cardiac arrhythmias.
“I am forced to retire from the sport much sooner than I had hoped or wished. I have an abnormal heart rhythm that can result in a fatal heart attack", according to Albert.
The 28-year-old has celebrated two world championship titles in the elite in his career. There are also several Belgian championship titles, overall World Cup victories and numerous race victories. Albert will undergo further tests in Leuven in the coming weeks.
