The 6-day race in Berlin is currently experiencing a show from Leif Lampater and Jasper de Buyst. Even after the third night both are in the front. In the Big Chase, the German-Belgian duo was the only pairing to win a round, overcoming a deficit they had incurred when Andreas Müller and Kenny de Ketele won the Small Chase. Lampater and De Buyst now have 176 points in the overall standings, ahead of Müller and De Ketele (147 points) as well as Robert Bartko and Theo Reinhardt (120 points). The first five teams are in one round, but Henning Bommel and Kersten Thiele, who are sixth, are already six rounds behind.
“It was cycling at its finest. For the third time, our athletes were able to present themselves in front of a sold-out house”, said Sixdays sports director Dieter Stein after the golden night early Sunday morning. “The women in particular proved with great races that they were at the start of our six-day race in Berlin. That was great advertising for track cycling.”
For the women found at Do not worry! – Axel Lange – Generali Ladies Cup already the last day of competition. With today's places two and three in the points race and elimination race, last year's winner Stephanie Pohl also won the overall victory in this year's edition with a total of 17 points. Second was Slovakia's Alzbeta Pavlendova with 22 points, third was Mieke Kröger with 26 points. Lisa Küllmer, who was second in the overall classification yesterday, did not compete today due to illness.
In the stayers, the European champion from Switzerland, Mario Birrer, with pacemaker Helmut Baur, took over the lead in the overall standings from Robert Retschke. Birrer won the third run of the evening in front of a fantastic crowd of spectators Esso Stayers World Cup in front of local hero and Florian Fernow and Patrick Kos from the Netherlands. The Swiss had only moved up to the front of the race from behind on the final laps and was just able to maintain his lead in the fight against Fernow.
One of the highlights of the evening was again the sprint competition. In the lap record setting, Maximilian Levy first broke the track record set by Robert Förstemann last year with 12,582 seconds, a few minutes later Förstemann fought back and regained his record with a flying time of 12,441 seconds for the 250 meters. In the overall standings, Förstemann continues to lead with 46 points ahead of Levy (45) and Erik Balzer (33rd).
