cycling: UCI World Championships: Courses for 2014 are set

14 December 2013 by the editorial office

ponferrada-purito

280 days to go until the UCI World Championships for road riders will open in Ponferrada, Spain. Anyone who is already excited about the routes of the individual competitions can look forward to it. As of today, the corresponding plans are available online.

From 21st to 28th September 2014, the road world championships will be held in Spain for the seventh time. A total of twelve competitions will be held in the Castilla y Léon region in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. It starts with the team time trial and ends with the title fight of the male road pros.

//Sunday, September 21, 2014: Team Time Trial

Both the 36,15 kilometer women's team time trial and the 57,1 kilometer men's race run over largely flat terrain. The only difficulty the women's course has is an ascent with a maximum incline of ten percent. There are two climbs for the men, but both are relatively short.

//Monday 22 to Wednesday 24 September 2014: individual time trial

The organizers of the world title fights in Ponferrada originally wanted to carry out the individual time trials as mountain time trials. To the delight of the specialists in the fight against the clock, however, this idea has been abandoned. The individual routes only have limited climbs, which should cause problems for drivers like Tony Martin.

The women's race is 29,5 kilometers long. The only notable climb is a 47,1 percent steep climb, but it comes very close to the finish and could be an executioner. The men's race is XNUMX kilometers long and peppered with two climbs in the second half of the race.

//Thursday 25 to Sunday 28 September 2014: road race

The women, in which defending champion Marianne Vos should be particularly happy about the route, have to complete the 18,2-kilometer route a total of seven times. At the end you have more than 2000 meters of altitude difference in your legs. For men, the profile is even tougher. Here you have to drive the course 14 times. After 254,8 kilometers and more than 4000 meters of altitude difference, riders with the personality Joaquin Rodriguez, Vincenzo Nibali and Peter Sagan in particular should be hoping for the rainbow jersey. Perhaps Rui Costa will also manage to defend his title.
