cycling: Track World Cup #2: German team on top

8 December 2013 by the editorial office

On the third day of the Track World Cup, the oval in Aguascalientes proved to be extremely fast. From a German point of view, the sprinters were once again the outstanding starters. First and foremost, Kristina Vogel from Erfurt was in a good mood. In addition to a new world record over 200 meters - Vogel needed only 10,384 seconds - she finally also secured victory in the sprint competition and thus extended her overall lead. In the final, she put her Australian competitor Anna Meares in her place in two runs. For Vogel it was the third win and second world record this weekend. Previously, she had already won the team sprint with her partner Miriam Welte.

The German men were no less successful. With a new suit and a proper preparation in the legs, Maximilian Levy managed to cover the 1000 meters in 57,949 seconds. That was not only a new German, but also a new world record. While the Cottbusser is allowed to keep the former, he had to cede the world record to the Frenchman Francois Pervis just a few minutes later, who burned an unbelievable 56,303 seconds onto the track. Third place went to Chemnitz-based Joachim Eilers, who also stayed under a minute with a time of 57,980 seconds.

A similar picture emerged in the keirin. Here, too, the German high-speed athletes were among the favourites. In the end it wasn't Levy, but Tobias Wächter from Brandenburg, who secured a medal with second place. Since he was already in the top five at the World Cup opener in Manchester, Wächter was also able to celebrate the overall World Cup lead in the keirin. Briton Matthew Crampton secured the race victory. The Australian Shane Perkins took third place.

The German team was voted the most successful team in the Track World Cup in Aguascalientes ahead of Great Britain and Australia.

The third stop of the Track World Cup will also be held in Mexico from January 17th to 19th. Then it will Pan American Velodrome in Guadalajara accommodate the drivers. At the end of February, the third top-class competition in South America is on the program with the World Championships in Cali, Colombia.
