cycling: Revolution Series #2: Kalz and Heßlich ahead in Glasgow

2 December 2013 by the editorial office

It could hardly have gone better for Marcel Kalz and Nico Heßlich. At the second round of the Revolution Series in Glasgow, the two drivers from the Rudy Project Racing Team really cleaned up last Saturday. Thanks to the victories and placements, the RPR team now also leads in the overall standings of the prestigious event.

Marcel Kalz and Nico Heßlich traveled to Glasgow with a lot of motivation. Both took part in the British racing series last year and have fond memories of it. However, they could not rest on the laurels of the previous year. First up was the 40 km UCI points race. “We both did very well in the race”, says Nico Hesslich. "In the beginning I was even in the lead, then Marcel was able to win a lap with some other drivers and collect a lot of points." In the end, however, it wasn't quite enough for Kalz to win. He finished second, one lap down on Jake Ragan. Then the competition followed "Flying Round". Heßlich, provided with plenty of sprinter genes, was able to show all his skills there. In a time of 13,850 seconds, he was second only to Olympic medalist and World Champion Ross Edgar, who set a time of 13,836 for the lap. A razor-thin decision, but again a very good second place for the Rudy Project Racing Team.

The evening session did not start as hoped. Although Marcel Kalz was able to win the elimination round, the commissaires put him in fourth place. "The audience celebrated Marcel, all drivers saw him as a winner, we don't know what the commissaires saw", Nico Heßlich commented on what was happening. Heßlich himself came sixth in the competition. With a bit of anger in their stomachs, the two track specialists then went to the start of the 1000 meter Madison time trial. The result was a superior victory. It took Kalz and Heßlich just 55,472 seconds to cover one kilometer. And everything went smoothly in the final scratch race over 15 kilometers. "We wanted to get valuable points for the day's win and the overall ranking of the Revolution Series", said Heßlich, who made sure during the course of the race that no other driver was able to win a lap and prepared the sprint for Kalz in the finale - which he was then able to win. This secured both the day's win and the lead in the overall standings.

The next stops in the racing series are Manchester (January 4, 2014 and February 1, 2014) and London (March 14/15, 2014).
