cycling: Ironman Western Australia: Thomschke and Hufe on the podium

8 December 2013 by the editorial office

raelert

The last Ironman of the year, the Ironman Western Australia, attracted an illustrious starting field to Busselton (Australia). Andreas Raelert in particular had traveled to Down Under with some hopes, as he wanted to make people forget about his elimination from the Ironman Hawaii and collect valuable points for the coming year. However, the race put a spoke in his wheel. As in Kona, he had to end his competition after almost 80 kilometers on the bike. At this point the man from Rostock was still well in the race despite a tire defect. Back problems, however, prevented the further journey.

Things went better for Markus Thomschke, who was only beaten by Frenchman Jeremy Jurkiewicz after a little more than eight hours. Australian David Dellow came in third. Thomschke benefited from an outstanding performance on the bike. At the end of the day, the man from Kamenz was able to record the second-best time. However, there was no cure for Jurkiewicz. The Frenchman was already in the lead after the swim and largely defended his lead on the bike. In the final marathon, he increased his lead to almost eight minutes.

The final result was similarly clear for women. Here the American Elizabeth Lyles won. Up until halfway through the marathon, it looked like Mareen Hufe would win. However, after becoming the first athlete to get off the bike, Lyles' pace took its toll. The Australian Lisa Marangon came in third.
