cycling: Super prestige Hamme-Zogge: Albert on the way

10 November 2013 by Veit Hammer

cross1

The former Belgian World Champion Niels Albert (BKCP Powertools) celebrated his third win of the season at the Superprestige Hamme-Zogge. On the technically demanding and heavily sodden course, Albert alone took the lead in the fifth of nine laps. In doing so, he benefited from an increase in pace by Walsleben, who had previously blown up the illustrious leading group. After the start, the Dutch champion Lars van der Haar (Rabobank) was in front, closely followed by Martin Bina (Kwadro-Stannah). While the Dutchman fell back over the course of the race, the Czech fell victim to a damaged chain.

So it was Nys (Crelan-KDL), Klaas Vantornout (Sunweb-Napoleon Games), Walsleben and Julien Taramarcaz (BMC) who fought for places behind Albert. At first it looked as if reigning World Champion Nys and reigning Belgian Champion Vantornout would complete the podium. On the penultimate lap, however, both collided. Nys didn't end well, but Vantornout had to run to the pits to change his bike and lost valuable time as a result. The beneficiary of this situation was Walsleben, who finished third behind Albert and Nys.
