cycling: Tour of Beijing #5: Mezgec at the end

15 October 2013 by the editorial office

As in the previous year, the final of the Tour of Beijing ended in front of Beijing's Olympic sports venue, the Bird's Nest. From the historic Tiananmen Square, the drivers had to cover another 117 kilometers. The Slovenian Luca Mezgec (Argos-Shimano) had the best end for himself, who relegated the two-time stage winner Nacer Bouhanni (FDJ.fr) and Moreno Hofland (Vacansoleil-DCM) to places in a fast and gripping final. For Mezgec it was the first win of the season.

For the Spaniard Benat Intxausti (Movistar) a place in the peloton was enough to secure the overall victory of the Tour of Beijing. Since none of the other competitors was able to gain ground, everything remained as usual in the overall standings. Daniel Martin (Garmin-Sharp) is second behind Intxausti, followed by David Lopez (Team Sky). The new world champion Rui Costa (Movistar) can look forward to fourth place, last year's winner Tony Martzin (Omega Pharma-QuickStep) sixth place.

As in the days before, the last stage was also marked by a breakaway group. A total of five riders had managed to break away from the field - including Spain's Juan Antonio Flecha (Vacansoleil-DCM) and Italy's Marco Pinotti (BMC), both contesting their final races as active professionals. The group was not blamed for the ambitions of the sprinters. She was caught just under seven kilometers from the finish.
