Hardly anyone would have expected that. In the homeland of British triathlon stars Alistair and Johnny Brownlee, Spaniard Javier Gomez has secured his second World Cup victory in his career after winning the title in 2010. In a gripping Grand Final in London, he beat defending champion Johnny Brownlee in the sprint. His brother, the reigning Olympic champion, was far behind at this point and finished 52nd on the day. By winning the day, Gomez was able to snatch the overall lead from the older of the two Brownlee brothers. He also ended a three-year winning streak for the British brothers.
The 30-year-old Gomez always stayed close to Johnny Brownlee and drove it just right. After 1,5 kilometers of swimming and 40 kilometers on the bike, the race was only decided on the last few meters of the 10-kilometer run that led the world's triathlon elite through the British capital. Here Gomez finally had the greater power reserves. Behind Brownlee, Gomez's compatriot Mario Mola took third place on the day. The best German was Franz Loeschke from Potsdam in eleventh place.
