General: Vattenfall Cyclassics: German double victory in Hamburg

August 26, 2013 by the editorial office

waterfall
The only German WorldTour race attracted the who's who of fast-paced professionals to Hamburg. They had to cover 242 kilometers in the Hanseatic city and in the surrounding area. In the end, John Degenkolb (Argos-Shimano) proved that races of this kind suit him. In a gripping sprint, he prevailed against the German champion André Greipel (Lotto Belisol) and the Norwegian Alexander Kristoff (Katusha).

A leading group of four dominated the race for large parts of the race. German drivers were also active in this. Michael Schwarzmann (NetApp-Endura) and Luian Kern (Ag2R La Mondiale) and their two co-breakaways Garikoitz Bravo (Euskaltel) and Jonas Jörgensen (Saxo-Tinkoff) opened up a maximum lead of over eight minutes. When the sprinter teams got serious, however, this was quickly used up. The flight finally came to an end a few kilometers from the destination.
